learning from good examples

The purpose of this page is to help students learn mapmaking patterns and procedures through the critical study of good map examples.

Below, I’ve begun to list map examples that I use to teach cartography at Middlebury College. Each example includes the following information:

PATTERNS (a link to the patterns illustrated by the example)

Procedures (a link to one or more sets of tutorials for software procedures)

Snapshot of the example (click on it for a better resolution image).

In my class, we discuss PATTERNS in lecture, students work through tutorials prior to lab, and then, in lab, students engage in group critiques of their work, or work on an analogous map to reinforce patterns and procedures.
