Small scale maps inevitably distort the spatial properties of geographic features. The distortion will depend on the type of projection being used.
Showing the graticule will provide a visual clue to both the projection and the kind of distortion in the map. It also provides the reader with a means to estimate distance without using a scale bar, which will be misleading on small scale maps.
