We see elevation expressed in landcover characteristics: lakes and marsh cover lowlands, trees grow on slopes and become sparse up high, giving way to bare rock and snow.
Use hue to represent vegetation and land cover patterns that can be associated with elevation. Avoid using dark tones in your palette so that you don’t limit contrast with labels and other features that appear on your map.
