A crossing guard stands ‘in the middle’ of an intersection (as if the intersection was a container, or something with an interior). Roads only ‘cross’ if there is no way to turn ‘off’ one and ‘onto’ another.
Casings of roads that meet at intersections should not cross but rather meet each other to define an interior space that is accessible by all roads. To convey the sense of an overpass, show one road intersecting another.
