People often think about roads as platforms (e.g. we go ‘on the road’). A platform is something that has distinct edges and appears raised above a surface. It may also connote a space or event that involves some risk (e.g. “on the town”).
Put casings on line features that represent roads. Give one casing slightly more weight (e.g. with a drop shadow) to give the illusion of height above a surface.
