Iconic symbols help people imagine what the landscape looks like. They help suggest qualities of space without specifying details of those qualities.
For maps that aren’t intended to help people navigate, use repeated iconic symbols to suggest characteristics of land cover. For example, use patterns of mountains to suggest topographic characteristics. Use patterns of trees to suggest vegetation cover.
