Some features that sit in the background may have poor contrast with the type in your labels due to spatial overlap or color/value similarities.
Place masks behind your labels to improve contrast of the labels. One quick solution is to put halos around the text. For example, Google maps puts white halos around black type on their reference maps. Another longer but more elegant method is to use halos as masks that clip conflicting elements.
