New to the libraries

The Middlebury libraries are pleased to announce access to some new resources for the Middlebury community.

  • ProQuest Statistical Abstracts of the World – an authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic conditions.
  • Disability in the modern world – One person in seven experiences disability, yet the story of this community and its contributions is largely absent from the scholarly record. Access to the primary and secondary source materials within this collection enables you to include this important piece of the puzzle in your research.
  • National Geographic: 1995 to the current issue – we have had access to this magazine archive through 1994 for several years. Now content up to and including the current issue is available online.
  • ProQuest Historical Newspapers, The Atlanta Constitution: 1946-1984 – we have had access to content from 1868 to 1945 for several years; this purchase fills a gap in Southern US news coverage for the mid- to late-twentieth century.
  • China: trade, politics, and culture; 1793-1980 – With documents encompassing events from the earliest English embassy to the birth and early years of the People’s Republic, this resource collects sources from nine archives to give an insight into the changes in China during this period.

MiddMedia and Muskrat are being replaced with Panopto

After a period of review and evaluation, Middlebury College adopted Panopto, a new service for creating, storing and sharing video. Panopto has been used since June 2017, with more than 1100 users and 5000 hours of video stored on it currently. In addition, Google Drive and Office 365 offer the ability to store and share video files, at no charge to us. To support these new products, and to reduce operating expenses, ITS needs to decommission MiddMedia and Muskrat, two older systems for storing and sharing video files. Both MiddMedia and Muskrat are less user friendly and lack the functionality of Panopto, Google Drive and Office 365.

  • On December 1, 2018 we will turn off the ability to store new files in MiddMedia and Muskrat.
  • You will have time until June 1, 2019 to migrate files from Muskrat, and until January 1, 2020 to migrate your files from MiddMedia. We expect most people will be able to migrate videos on their own, but those with more than twenty files can contact us for support.
  • Muskrat videos will remain available in read only mode until June 1, 2019 when we will decommission Muskrat.
  • MiddMedia videos will remain available in read-only mode until January 1, 2020, to comply with data retention policies for courses. On January 1, 2020 we will decommission MiddMedia.
  • For information on how to migrate your files, please visit this page: Move Your Files From MiddMedia to Panopto.

Drupal Security Update – Wednesday, August 1

This Wednesday, April 25, we will apply a security update to two Drupal 8 sites shortly after it is released. This will occur between 12:00 and 3:00pm EDT, which is 9:00am-12:00pm PDT. The Drupal project has posted a pre-release announcement of this update.

We do not anticipate any service interruption while the update is applied. Still, we advise you to have saved work in the sites prior to the scheduled update. We will post an announcement here when the update has been successfully applied, which will contain more information about the issue.

These are the sites affected:

RESOLVED – Wireless issue

We are pleased to report that our MiddleburyCollege wireless network is now fully functional.

The MiddleburyBackup network will remain in place until 07:00 am tomorrow, July 27th. Your devices will automatically switch to the MiddleburyCollege network at that time (if they do not, please select MiddleburyCollege from the list of available networks).

Thank you so much for your patience while we worked to resolve matters. Again, we are sorry for the disruption.

Wireless Issue Continues — Temporary WiFi Network Created

We continue to experience issues with our wireless networks.  To provide network access while we work on a long-term solution we have created a new, temporary wireless network that will provide the same service as before:

Temporary network name:  MiddleburyBackup

Temporary password:  panthers (all lowercase, no punctuation, no spaces)

The temporary network will be removed from use once MiddleburyCollege service has been restored and is stable.  We will provide an update at that time.

Remember, you may connect successfully to our network using an Ethernet cable as our wired network is fully functional.

We are very sorry for this disruption in service and any inconvenience.  Thank you once again for your patience.
