About Adam Franco, Ian McBride and Jonathan Maddix

I'm a web developer at Middlebury.

Weekly Web Updates – March 25, 2019

The old Middlebury Institute websites that were at www.miis.edu and old.miis.edu are now fully offline. During the redesign of the site we made an effort to add redirects from the old copy of the content to the version on the new website and these redirects remain in place. Nearly all of the content on the old site was public and, as such, can still be viewed in the Internet Archive.

Weekly Web Updates – March 11, 2019

We have decide not to make the Disable Gutenberg or Classic Editor plugins enabled for both technical and support reasons. If you would like to use the WordPress editor as it was before WordPress 5, you can add a Classic Block to your content.

During testing and support we have come across one issue with the new editing interface: if you had the Category to Tag Converter plugin enabled and used it to convert tags on your site, some of the tags may be “orphaned” and will give an “Unable to save” error when you try to save a post or page with that tag. If you notice this, please contact us and we can work on the affected site to recreated the missing tags.

WordPress Upgraded to Version 5.0.3

We have completed the upgrade of WordPress, which is used for sites.middlebury.edu and sites.miis.edu to version 5.0.3. WordPress 5 is a complete redevelopment of the editor, named “Gutenberg”, which now features a new “block” system for working with media assets and complex markup.

Here is a Lynda course on WordPress 5 to help you get started with this new editor. Skip ahead to section 2, Content Management, as the introductory sections don’t apply to our environment. There is more information about the new features of WordPress 5 in the official announcement blog post. This version also includes a new theme, Twenty Nineteen, which is available for you to use.

Workaround: Get the Classic Editor Back

The new Block Editor has a block for the Classic Editor. Here’s how to add it to your post.
