Introduction

A Message from Dr. François Clemmons

It is with great pleasure that I greet you from this modern miracle of communication: the Internet. As most of you know my adult life has been characterized by live performances all over the globe; from North America to Europe, and the most exotic locales of Asia. Throughout all of this the core of our work and communication has been the American Negro Spiritual.

In my heart I feel that this is a further extension of my work on television for 28 years. Thank you for welcoming us into your special world. We expect to have new ideas and proposals for you over the next several months. We’d love to hear from you. Stay in touch, and let me know if you have requests or ideas to be developed, or would like to talk further about having me come to your neighborhood for live performances of concerts, workshops, masterclasses and lecture demonstrations. Thanks to the ‘magic’ of the modern-day travel, it’s really only a matter of hours before we could be in your neighborhood, greeting you in person and sharing the legacy of the American Negro Spiritual.

Thank you!

A Poem
OUR  VOICE

for François, with gratitude

Nobody sang.
Hours: again
and again
bodies
children
days  numbers
water

broken
houses
mothers
waiting
weeping
by the bleeding
sea.All words.
Bad news.
Short, stammering.
The world away.No musictill you walked
through December snow
to unlock the empty hall.
You sat alone
in the filtered dark:

Earth’s Voice
making tears
into song.
