TENNIS BECOMES POPULAR

In 1888, tennis became a popular form of recreation at the College.  Rather than seek representation in Middlebury’s Athletic Association, tennis enthusiasts formed their own association, collecting dues to pay for facilities and equipment costs.  Students originally formed teams based on their class in college.  In addition, a small “co-ed” team of female players is listed in some issues of the college yearbook.  Student enthusiasm for tennis is reflected in the following gallery of images, all of which are derived from college archives and publications:
