In 1908, the first intramural basketball games were held at Middlebury.  Both men and women played basketball in the 1910s. An intercollegiate men’s basketball team was not established until the 1917-18 season, when, according to Damon Hatheway, “Simeon E. Murch leads Middlebury to perfect 7-0 record and the first of seven Vermont State Championships in the program’s inaugural season” (Hatheway timeline).
