Rehearsal 10-30-23

Here are a few bits from today’s rehearsal.

Hagenberg
Apamuy shungo
Dos Corazones

These are “works in progress.”

  • Ensemble – we lose pulse and cohesion between sections of the choir.
  • “Big” notes are not always prepared: not enough support, not thinking about it, perhaps unsure.
  • Review texts! Takes JUST a few minutes, and that knowledge will make a great difference.
  • Listen to the recordings, they offer a sense for how the pieces basically flow.
  • Use part resources, on RESOURCES page! There is time to review those.

STANDING ORDER: I’m going to adjust more towards sections, I think this will make a difference in several ways.

See you Wednesday!

Rehearsal 10-18

Hello everyone! I was mixed up and forgot that it is Wednesday, so I didn’t have the frame of mind of my Wednesday “goodbye and take care of yourselves” and now I’m going to be off balance until Monday.

Please do take care of yourselves. The soundfiles below are unfortunately not so clear due to recorder placement, thus I didn’t include everything; I’ll do something else next time. They do show how a couple of things are going – which in general terms, is terrific. We will work right up to performance and I believe we will hit these at a good moment in our process.

Behave like singers, and take care of yourselves and your voices!

Finzi 10-18 rehearsal (first run/work)
Hagenberg 10-18 rehearsal – light work (edited)
Cantare – basic sing-through

10-16-23

Rehearsal recordings are on the Resources page! Note the difference in sound between the two locations, and that both are generally good.

Rehearsed today:

  • Warm up
    • emphasizing gradual crescendo and decrescendo and demands of vocal technique
    • “ah” and “ih” shape to create greater resonant space for several vowels in our texts
    • tuning in fifths (each section one fifth above B-T-A-S), maintaining tuning through cresc./decresc.
    • slides to encourage phonation, freedom, use full width of vocal folds (“chords”)
  • Galindo – Dos Corazones – NEW!
  • My Spirit Sang All Day – ALL
  • There Was a Time – ALL
  • Apamuy Shungo – ALL
  • Standing Side By Side – ALL

There Was a Time, Standing Side By Side – time to review and internalize the poetry, to

  1. sing with some sense of prosody (sometimes these composers compromise that slightly)
  2. sing with impact, meaning, intellect behind the performance.

What concepts in our repertoire texts resonate with your own values?

What can these texts teach us, that we can share with others in our community?

Are you telling your friends about our November 5 concert, in order to share these ideas and the accomplishment of your work?

Resources available!

New part resources are available as repertoire develops! Check Singer Resources frequently!

Please pardon that soprano 2 and tenor 2 are missing from “Standing…” at the moment.
