The film’s depiction of how nuclear war would impact women was quite striking to me as it seemed to portray women as fragile. For example, when US nuclear missiles are launched, Eve Dahlberg continues to make beds in her house and becomes hysterical after her husband has to drag her down to the basement for safety. Such as sequence depicts women as unable to cope with the harsh realities of nuclear war and individuals who have to be saved by the brave men in their lives in order to survive. This idea is also depicted when Denise Dahlberg becomes unhinged and races outside of the cellar. Again, it is a woman shown becoming unhinged and having to be saved by her man. Such a depiction portrays women as weak and unable to cope with nuclear war, while men are portrayed as the tough saviors of women.
