Week 4 Day 2 Discussion Question 4

In “U.S. Culture and the Cold War,” Peter J. Kuznick and James Gilbert caution against attributing every dimension of postwar American culture to the Cold War.  They write, “Cold War culture is not synonymous with American culture” (10).  Likewise, in “The Illusion of Unity in Cold War Culture,” Alan Brinkley argues that “Other social and cultural transformations had at least as much to do with the shaping of what we now call ‘cold war culture’ as did the cold war itself” (63).  How do you think these authors might react to Elaine Tyler May’s assertion that U.S. nuclear anxieties were closely tied to the conventions of the nuclear family in the Cold War years?
