In this post we recognize Jenn Pottinger, Facilities Services, for her 25 years of service to Middlebury. Jenn shares her experience her first year at Middlebury, her appreciation for her coworkers, her favorite time of year on campus, and her future plans to spend her winters in Jamaica.

What did you do prior to coming to work at Middlebury?

This is my first and only adult job.  I worked several summer jobs in high school and college.

What job titles have you held while working here?

I began my career as a Telecommunicator in the Department of Public Safety (DPS) before transitioning to the front desk at Facilities Services in 2006. Although the job titles in Facilities Services have evolved over the years, the core responsibilities have remained consistent. However, along with these title changes, my job responsibilities have grown significantly.

Take us back to your first year as an employee.  What were the most significant things happening in your life outside of work at that point?

In July 2000, my husband Paul and I got married, marking the start of our family. That fall, we both joined Middleby; I took a position in Public Safety, while Paul joined Dining Services. Our family expanded with the birth of our first daughter in 2001, followed by our second daughter in 2002. In January 2004, we were delighted to welcome Paul’s son and daughter from Jamaica to live with us.

Many people change jobs/careers multiple times in their working life. Something must have kept you here for 25 years. Is it anything that you can put into words?

We chose to stay in Middlebury so our children could grow up in a safe community and we could be close to family. Middlebury has always been a stable employer, offering great health and retirement benefits. However, what makes Middlebury truly special are all the coworkers I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the past 25 years.

What are your plans for the next 25 years?

We plan to retire in 5 to 10 years and become snowbirds, spending our winters in Jamaica.

Do you have a favorite place on campus?

I don’t have a favorite place, but I do have a favorite time to walk on campus. After finishing my shift at DPS during the winter, I loved walking to my car at 4 a.m. The campus, illuminated by the soft glow of sidewalk lights, transforms into a winter wonderland. The bare tree branches and gentle snowfall create a magical and serene atmosphere, making those early morning walks truly unforgettable.
