Well-Being Spotlight: Healthy Habits & Hygiene by Rebecca Schubert
Millions of Americans are impacted by heart disease every year, making it the leading cause of death in the United States. Several lifestyle habits and health conditions can increase your risk of developing heart disease, including consuming a diet high in saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars; a sedentary lifestyle; using cigarettes and other tobacco products; consuming too much alcohol; and conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and carrying excess body fat.
While we typically think of our primary care provider as the go-to for identifying heart disease risk, your dentist may also provide valuable insights. There is a strong link between oral health and heart health, primarily due to the role of inflammation and bacteria.
Poor oral hygiene can lead to gum disease (periodontitis), which allows harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream. These bacteria contribute to inflammation in the blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease.
Maintaining good oral hygiene is an essential step in reducing your heart disease risk. Simple habits can make a big difference, such as:
- Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
- Flossing daily to remove plaque between teeth.
- Visiting your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups.
- Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Avoiding tobacco products and limiting alcohol intake.
Take proactive steps now to protect both your heart and oral health. Small changes in daily habits can have a big impact on your overall well-being.
