The Middlebury Institute’s Committee on Art in Public Places (iCAPP) is delighted to unveil a captivating new exhibition featuring the bold abstract paintings of Monterey Peninsula artist, poet, and photographer Heidi McGurrin. With a lifetime of curiosity and a fearless spirit, McGurrin’s art delves into the heart of indigenous beauty, social justice, and the profound bond between nature and human emotion. Her work reflects a life deeply enriched by her travels to Cuba, Haiti, Brazil, and the Incan regions of Peru, as well as her strong connection to the culture and landscapes of California.
McGurrin’s artistic journey began in a world fueled by vivid imagination, and it was through poetry in 2017 that she first began to share these inner landscapes with the world. Today, her visual art stands alongside her literary expressions, offering an immersive experience that fuses abstraction with personal reflection. Her pieces echo the vibrant colors, textures, and rhythms of the natural world and indigenous cultures she cherishes, inviting us to explore our own stories and connections more deeply.
This exhibition is an invitation to step into McGurrin’s world—a place where poetry and paint flow in harmony, where the earth’s spirit and history’s whispers come alive in every brushstroke. With works that are both dynamic and introspective, McGurrin inspires us to pause, reflect, and embrace the beauty found in imperfection, the wildness of creation, and the boundless potential of the imagination.
We invite you to join us in celebrating this extraordinary collection of abstract works—each as thoughtful and poetic as the artist herself.
