Preliminary topic and list of three secondary and three primary sources

Topic Statement:

I am interested in investigating the role that pickup soccer plays in the formation of community and notions of identity amongst immigrant players in Riverside Park in New York City.  By utilizing the participant-observation method of ethnographic research, I aim to create a short documentary film that explores these aforementioned themes. I will spend the summer playing soccer and building relationships with members of the community.  Based on what I have already gleaned from my limited, prior exposure to this group, I postulate that besides playing for fun, pickup soccer serves as both a method of preserving a notion of national identity, while simultaneously acting as a form of stress relief from the pressures of urban life.
