In “Stereotypes Of Appalachia Obscure A Diverse Picture,” Sarah Baird discusses the racial history of Appalachia and suggests that the region is more racially diverse than media coverage, which commonly depicts its people as “poor, backward, and white,” suggests. Are you persuaded by Baird’s brief account? Why do you think Appalachia’s racial diversity is rarely foregrounded in news or entertainment media?
