Ron Kovic was one of the working-class soldiers whom Christian Appy profiles in Working-Class War. In Born on the Fourth of July, Kovic discusses how his upbringing in the working-class suburb of Massepequa, New York led him to join the Marines in 1964. What factors contributed to his enlistment?  How does the reality of combat and its aftermath compare with the martial ideals Kovic fostered in his youth?
