Experiential Learning and Curricular Innovation

In this MIIS-MIDD Roundtable participants will have the opportunity to discuss experiential learning and curricular innovation in light of Middlebury’s strategic framework.  Thor Sawin, (MIIS TESOL/TFL Assistant Professor) and Sarah Stroup (Middlebury College Associate Professor of Political Science and member of the Strategy Committee) will facilitate this interactive session, during which we will explore different approaches to experiential learning across Middlebury and collaboratively identify meaningful action steps that would promote this form of learning and curricular innovation.  All are welcome!

This meeting will complement the Open Meeting scheduled on this topic for Thursday, May 10th from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in Davis Family Library 105 A & B announced by the Office of the Provost, and is an additional opportunity for those unable to attend Thursday’s session or who prefer the roundtable format.

Both Thor and Sarah are members of the working group on making Middlebury a laboratory for curricular innovation and experiential learning.

An Intercultural Middlebury

Netta Avineri (MIIS TESOL/TFL Assistant Professor and Intercultural Competence Committee Chair) and Roman Graf (Middlebury College Professor of German and Comparative Literature and Head of Brainerd Commons)

In this MIIS-MIDD Roundtable participants will have the opportunity to collectively explore “intercultural competency” (ICC) as one of the key strategic distinctions identified in Middlebury’s strategic framework. Netta Avineri (MIIS TESOL/TFL Assistant Professor and Intercultural Competence Committee Chair) and Roman Graf (Middlebury College Professor of German and Comparative Literature and Head of Brainerd Commons) will facilitate this interactive session, during which we will discuss and brainstorm definitions, frameworks, theories, and concepts of interculturality, identify existing efforts across Middlebury, and collaboratively build meaningful action steps around this concept both within and outside the classroom. This collective discussion is designed to embody intercultural knowledge, dispositions, and practices through its format and goals, involving a range of individuals who play diverse roles at the 2 campuses. All are welcome!

What is digital fluency and why does it matter?

Middlebury’s strategic framework identifies digital fluency and critical engagement as one of our key strategic directions. In this interactive hands-on session, we’ll explore various facets of critical digital fluency, why it matters, and what we might do within and beyond the curriculum to develop our own and our students’ fluencies.

Flipping the Classroom: Lessons Learned

Professor Byers has been using flipped classroom pedagogy in his Organic Chemistry classes for three years.  He will discuss his motivations for moving to this model, his preparation and implementation.  He will also share some unexpected “dos and don’ts” from his experience as well as the out comings of his continuing and evolving use of this method of classroom instruction.
