MIIS Alumnus Challenges the Class of 2011 to Make a Difference for Future MIIS Students

To celebrate the Class of 2011 and build a tradition of giving among our alumni, board member Andrea Gabrielle MBA ’88 is providing matching funds to MIIS students who make a gift to support the Alumni Scholarship Fund at MIIS. It works like this: If a graduating or current student makes a gift of $20 or more, Andrea will match that gift with a $100 contribution. That’s a total of $120 that will be added to the Fund, which was established in honor of and by MIIS alumni. Scholarship funds raised by the Challenge could be awarded as early as spring 2012. Three scholarships have already been awarded this year with the funds raised from last year’s Challenge.

Thanks to all those who have already contributed to the Challenge. Gifts from everyone in the MIIS community are greatly appreciated and make a difference! Learn more about the Challenge and contribute today at go.miis.edu/2011-challenge.

Kathryn Joyce Joins Advancement Staff

The Office of Institutional Advancement is pleased to introduce our newest team member, Kathryn Joyce, Manager of Corporate and Foundation Relations, who arrived this week from Denton, Texas. With more than 17 years in fundraising, Kathryn brings a broad range of experience working with diverse nonprofit organizations including the Dallas Museum of Art, University of North Texas, Vassar College, and the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra. “She has been successful at routinely securing seven figure gifts from corporate, foundation and individual donors for diverse priorities and programs, and preparing proposals for a myriad of opportunities including a recent $10 million submission to the federal government’s Social Innovation Fund.”  Here at the Institute, Kathryn will be  working closely with faculty, the administration, and other partners to expand and enhance corporate and foundation relationships for increased investment in various areas.  In the coming weeks, Kathryn will be meeting with various offices and individuals to learn more about our multi-faceted community.

Class of 2010 Challenge

To celebrate the Class of 2010 and build a tradition of giving among our alumni, MIIS trustee Jed Smith has launched the Jed A. Smith/Class of 2010 Scholarship Fund. Jed has offered to match every gift of $25 or more with $100, up to $25,000. That’s a total of $125 – five times your original investment!  Gifts from faculty and staff to the Class of 2010 Scholarship Fund are also eligible for the matching funds.

Response to the challenge has been encouraging; we’ve received 58 gifts totaling more than $8,000 with Jed’s match; 36 have been from staff and faculty members!

Thanks to all those who have already contributed—your participation makes a difference.  The May 22nd  deadline is fast approaching so please consider taking advantage of this opportunity to leverage your gift and support the MIIS community.

Help OGT Get Some Green

The Institute’s student-led organic garden, Our Green Thumb, has been selected by the Monterey County Weekly to be featured in their readers’ challenge.  The challenge encourages readers to support local organizations and have their contributions matched by the Weekly – up to a total of $100,000.

In this week’s issue, you will find a form listing eligible projects.  Select OGT and complete the form, including your contribution, by December 31, 2009 and the Weekly’s Community Fund will match your contribution.  Funds for OGT will support an array of enhancements (organic seeds and plant starts, equipment to expand composting, outdoor classroom materials including an outdoor marker board) and activities for the campus community and beyond.

You can pick up your copy of the Weekly at the kiosk next to the Segal Building or by Casa Fuente on Pacific Street.  Additionally, copies will be available in Institutional Advancement (McGowan 300).

IA Welcomes Anna Dudney

Last month, Institutional Advancement welcomed Anna Dudney as its new development coordinator. She will provide strategic support to IA’s major gift fundraising efforts and overall direction for its participation-level fundraising initiatives.

Anna knows the Institute well; her mother is a MIIS graduate and Anna herself graduated from the nearby York School. She received her BA from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and is fluent in both Polish and French. Anna will return to Loyola next week for the conference Social Justice & Diversity by the Sea: Spirituality, Creativity, and Activism, where she will be presenting her paper Gender Wars at Work: A Lesson in Ideology from Anchorman. The conference is being convened by the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender.

Please join IA in welcoming Anna to MIIS!

Reminder: IA and Communications Open House this Friday

We hope to see many of you at our open house/happy hour later this week!  Please come by to visit our new space, learn more about what we do, and enjoy good food and company.  Door prizes will be awarded!

Advancement(and many others)@work

With the closing of the Institute’s fiscal year on June 30th, Institutional Advancement also marked the end of its FY09 fundraising efforts.  While the economic downturn did present significant challenges, there are several bright spots to report:

The number of faculty/staff donors grew from 44 at the close of FY08 to 52 at the close of FY09 (18% increase)

The number of alumni donors grew from 131 at the close of FY08 to 162 at the close of FY09 (24% increase)

Overall cash received grew from $5,315,554 million in FY08 to $5,355,569 million in FY09 (a slight, slight increase)

While Institutional Advancement is the hub of these efforts, we could not have reached any of these results without the help of many across campus.  Special thanks to the Digital Media Commons for their help with our digital solicitation and stewardship pieces, Recruiting and Student Financial Services for providing us with many compelling student stories, and to the members of the academic leadership and faculty who have spent time with both our prospective and existing donors.  We look forward to, hopefully, even better results in the coming year!
