CNS Director speaks in Luxembourg, London, Oxford

CNS Director Bill Potter made the following presentations during the month of May:

1.    Presentation on “Latest Steps in the US-Russian Missile Defense Dance” before the Science and Technology Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Luxembourg, May 19, 2013.

2.    Presentation on “Reevaluating the Health of the NPT in Light of the 2013 NPT PrepCom” at Westminster Palace, Parliament.  The talk was hosted by the Right Honorable Lord Des Browne of Ladyton, European Leadership Network, London, May 21, 2013.

3.    Seminar on the “Assessing the 2013 NPT PrepCom” at St. Anthony’s College, University of Oxford, May 22, 2013.

Professors Kardam and Kropp Published in New IIE Book

Nuket and Fredric3Congratulations to Professors Nüket Kardam and Fredric Kropp for their recent contribution to the new book “Women in the Global Economy: Leading Social Change,” published by the Institute of International Education (IIE).  Along with authors and distinguished practitioners from the policy, nonprofit and government sectors, Kardam and Kropp explore the impact and obstacles women face as agents of social change in a global economy.  To read their chapter, “Women as Social Entrepreneurs: A Case Study“, pick up a copy of the book today!

Megan Joyce Promoted

Congratulations to Megan Joyce on her promotion to Assistant Director of Student Life Activities in the Office of Student Services.  In her new role, Megan will focus on enhancing the student life experience through new programming, resources and activities.  Megan’s creativity, excellent program development and management skills, along with her strong connection with the students, make her a natural fit for this position.

We are currently searching for a replacement for Megan’s former position, Student Services Associate.

 

Hahn Interviewed on South Caucasus

An interview with Gordon Hahn by Elshan Rustamov, “Gordon Khan: ‘SShA demonstrirovali nesposobnost’ vserez zanyatsya Yushnym Kavlazom’,” was published in First News of Azerbaijan, 25 August 2011, 10:12. The interview covers politics in the South Caucasus and is in Russian.

Hahn has been appointed as Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C.  His e-journal, the ‘Islam, Islamism and Politics in Eurasia Report (IIPER), born at MIIS will now be published by CSIS on a bimonthly basis.

MIIS students and alums dominate WIPO fellowship program

When the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva selects nine MIIS students/alumni for its prestigious Translation and Terminology Fellowships for 2011, it is major news. When these nine are 56% of the 16 total awarded worldwide, it is a major coup for MIIS and the Translation, Interpretation & Localization Management programs in GSTILE. Congratulations to the fellowship recipients, and thanks to Jeff Wood for sharing this news.

T&I Professor Laura Burian recently returned from the 3rd Strategic and Economic Dialogue between the US and China, as part of a MIIS team of interpreters for the U.S. Department of State. Most of the details of these events are not available to the public, but here is a snippet of video that the State Dept. posted on its web site.  If you look quickly (hint: keep your eyes on the upper right corner of the screen for the first few second) you will see Laura briefly,  but then will hear her interpret for a very important person.

Prof. Kropp authors chapter in Handbook of Research on New Venture Creation

Fredric Kropp had a chapter published in the Handbook of Research on New Venture Creation, published by Edward Elgar.  The chapter, “Cultural Context as a Moderator of Private Investment Behavior,” looks at the role of culture in how entrepreneurs are funded.  The book is in the MIIS library.

Prof. Dow publishes two papers

Sandra Dow has published a paper in  the Asia Pacific Journal of Management , Volume 28, Number 2, 299-323 (June 2011): “Disaggregating the group effect: Vertical and horizontal keiretsu in changing economic times” by Sandra Dow, Jean McGuire and Toru Yoshikaw.

She also published a second paper in the European Financial Review in February 2011: “Industrial Networks in Japan: Blessing or Curse?” by Sandra Dow and Jean McGuire.

Kardam publishes article in gender equality journal
