Philipp Bleek, professor in the Non-proliferation and Terrorism Studies program, has pursued an active schedule of presentations and publications over the last few months.  In May, he was on a very high profile panel with General Wesley Clark, another retired four-star general, former assistant secretary of state Jamie Rubin, and new deputy assistant secretary of defense Matt Spence at the “Davos of the West Coast,” the Milken Conference.

He co-authored an article in Insight Turkey with MIIS alum, Aaron Stein, after hiring Stein to be a rapporteur for a Track II meeting in Ankara in summer 2011 that he co-organized with another MIIS alum, Sebnem Udum, who is now a professor in Turkey. At this meeting,  US and Turkish government officials grappled with the Iran nuclear issue. Bleek and Stein also published an article entitled “Turkey and America Face Iran,” based on the same meeting, in the journal Survival.

He also Published the article “Shadow Wars,” with David Vielhaber, another MIIS alum who now works full-time with Bleek on a U.S.-government funded project.

In October, Bleek and Vielhaber briefed at the Department of Homeland Security’s Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, the culmination of a project they worked on to assess nuclear and radiological trafficking risks that might involve the intersection of transnational criminal organizations and terrorist groups, with a geographic focus on Latin America and the Caribbean.
