Professor Zinan Ye recently wrote an essay in the Chinese Translators’ Journal, in memory of his long time friend, Dr. Eugene Nida, often regarded as the most important translation scholar in the 20th Century. Dr.Nida died in August 2011. In his essay, Ye reviewed his personal relationship with Dr. Nida, summarized his theory of translation, and mentioned his great contribution to translation studies in China. For a generation of translation scholars, Nida has been an iconic figure closely related to Chinese translation studies. As one senior editor in China says, a Chinese history of translation studies for the past half century would be incomplete without mentioning Eugene Nida. It was an honor that in the late 1990s, Dr. Nida came to the Monterey Institute to give a series of lectures on translation. That was his only visit to Monterey.
Chinese Translators’ Journal is the most influential translation journal in China, published by The Translators Association of China. GISTILE has several projects with that Chinese national organization.
