Localization Process, Compare and Suggestions for Chegg.com

Introduction
Why Chegg?

This is a pretend project, but an absolutely comparison and suggestion for Chegg.com. I decided to do this project after talking to Junjun, the PM(project manager) at Chegg, who will create a localized website for Chegg.com. As a new localization learner, I created a website called Chegglocalization based on Chegg.com to better explain my suggestions since I don’t have the right to edit on Chegg.com.

Target language

Before I consider the comparison and suggestions, let’s figure out what is involved in a localization project. The first question is what languages the client should localize their website into. This will depend on the website traffic and the popularity of languages used on the internet. As of January 2020, English, Chinese, and Spanish were the top 3 languages on the internet. Chegg’s website showed that they already had simplified Chinese and Spanish, and their original language was English, so I suggest adding Traditional Chinese to their list.

Translation rate

After we decided on the target language, what’s the translation rate for traditional Chinese? (This form doesn’t include any text transcreation fee).

(Chegg has more than 13276 words on their website, the word account number is only for Chegglocalization, not for Chegg)

Style guide

In addition, I created a style guide based on the website’s style that translators can follow to achieve the desired style. Initially, the style guide should transfer much of the information about the content in the specification established to the linguists.

Localization timeline

The estimated working and delivery date for this project are listed below, and the time will increase if the client wants to localize their website to more than one language. The timeline was divided into five parts, preparation, assigned to, process, start, and days people need to work on it. Also, to make sure they are on time, PM and the whole team need to follow the timeline as well. The timeline can, however, be changed if the team faces problems and they need to discuss it with clients.

My discussion of website localization was only part of the process, not the entire one.

Comparison and suggestion video

Let’s move on to the comparison and suggestions part. This video was divided into two parts, comparisons, and suggestions. Please watch the video below for more details.

Tip for WordPress translation import

A small tip for someone who wants to localize their WordPress website to other languages by Memsource(Phrase), which is a big problem that happened to me before, is DO NOT CHANGE YOUR DOWNLOADED FILE’S NAME, otherwise, even though you successfully import the translated file to your site, it will still remain in English, and won’t show the language you did.

Even though I preferred to choose Phrase (Memsource) to translate my website, the WPML edit button is still a great option. If you find out that you have a translation error in one sentence, then you can click Dashboard—WPML—Translation—edit to fix it.
