September 13 – Introduction in-class
For Thursday:
- Do Video Commentary post
- Choose 2 different options for your chosen critical object (film, TV show, webseries, etc.) and rip or capture the media per these tutorials. For long-form media like a TV series, make sure you have at least 90 minutes ripped.
- Read “Has the Video Essay Arrived?” (Monaghan)
- If you do not have experience with Adobe Premiere, start working on the LinkedIn Learning tutorials to help learn the platform.
- Watch “What Makes a Video Essay Great?” by Kevin B. Lee
Watch “What Isn’t a Video Essay?” by Grace Lee
In-class on Tuesday, we’ll watch the following videos:
- Matt Zoller Seitz, “The Substance of Style” (alas, no longer online) and “Rushmore“
- Koganada, “What Is Neo-realism?”
- Emma Hampsten, “Women, Intimacy, and Sexual Violence in Hitchcock Films“
Sept 15 – Assignment #1 Workshop
- Make sure you have chosen media for the exercises on your hard drive ready to go!
