Japanese Parliament

Our trip to the Japanese Parliament to see Mr. Suzuki, a former LDP member and member of the House of Councilors, was guided by the very informative Mr. Inada. Before our discussion with Mr. Suzuki, Mr. Inada gave us a tour of the House of Councilors’ side of the National Diet Building. We were able to look down into the central hall, which features statues of Itagaki, Okuma, and Hirobumi, and a single empty pedestal, for whose existence Mr. Inada gave us several theories. On the ceiling of the central hall are four paintings, each depicting a season: spring, summer, fall, and winter. We were even able to view the Emperor’s resting chamber (Mr. Inada told us that Mt. Fuji was once visible from its windows, though that view is now blocked by buildings), and the Chamber of the House of Councilors, where we sat in the public gallery. From there, we could look down upon the Chamber, close enough to see the name plates at each seat.
