“Everything in the world is strange and marvelous to well-open eyes”

Those were the lines I read from Jose Oretega y Gasset’s The Revolt of the Masses as our collectivo snaked it’s way across the green peaks surrounding Cuzco. I really internalized these words at the beginning of our trip, and as such attempted to open my eyes to the weird and beautiful in Perú.

Aside from the magnificent landscapes that are found in the Sacred Valley, the more spectacular for me were the people and the connections that were being forged everyday. We met so many different people whose ideas and interests aligned with ours, who wished to collaborate with us, and who wanted to support us in any way they could; it was truly a marvelous thing. From American and Peruvian agroecology students, to indigenous farmers, and even the people you would meet at the mercado, you never knew how someone was going to help you out on any given day.

Building connections between likeminded groups and individuals is a powerful thing. The NGO Network project is an attempt to bring together the different social change actors in the Sacred Valley in order to combine ideas and resources for a greater impact. In this month we have managed to reach out to a lot of different people with so many different offerings; the connections that can be formalized among these peoples can create a system of change that will grow and evolve into something that generates change on a large-scale. These connections have at times been strange, but always marvelous. ~Derek Polka
