2023 Undergraduate Fellow Spotlight: Ashley Morford

Ashley Morford is a rising Senior at Indiana University majoring in Political Science, International Studies, and Russian with a minor in Spanish. Her interest in nuclear nonproliferation and arms control stems from a class she took her sophomore year on American Nuclear Policy, which she later supported by working as a teaching assistant and answering student questions and identifying interesting and relevant articles for assigned readings. In addition to this, Ashley’s on-campus commitments include serving as Vice-President of her university’s chapter of the Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society and Director of Operations for her school’s chapter of the Alexander Hamilton Society. Off-campus, she has held internships at various non-profits, think tanks, and government institutions, including the Center for European Policy Analysis and the US Senate. In the future, Ashley hopes to continue to develop her knowledge of Russian and apply the skills she learns throughout the CNS Undergraduate Fellowship Program to a career in arms control and nonproliferation research and advocacy. In her free time, Ashley enjoys cooking, reading, hiking, and spending time with friends.

Research Presentation: Evolution of Chinese Export Controls

Presentation Link

Since China’s detonation of an atomic weapon in 1964, the international community has feared its potential to proliferate nuclear material, knowledge, and delivery systems to its partners. This fear was due in no small part to its lack of a public export control framework until 1996. This presentation will explore the evolution of China’s views and policies towards export controls, evaluate their effectiveness, and discuss potential developments in these areas as China increasingly seeks to exert its influence as a global leader.
