Unit 2 Lesson Plan- Thursday March 7th 2013

Lesson Outline

This is the complete lesson plan that I was planning to teach on March 7th in the PRC. Due to the time constraints, I only could teach the first section of it.

Target Audience & Context: Beginners/ Low Intermediate/ level ESL class of 10-14 students

Class length: 90-120 minutes (6:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m.)

Materials: Whiteboard, markers, copies of Craigslist ads and News Articles (see Appendix C

and D)

Classroom setting: Peace Resource Center Intermediate and upper-intermediate reading and speaking class.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

1. Practice speaking to introduce themselves in English.

2. Learn new vocabulary about Craigslist ads through reading and peer conversations.

3. Express their opinions to the class regarding their job experience.

4. Read and speak about a news headlines.

5. Practice writing and speaking new that relate to opinion and news.

Warm-up:

(15 min)

  • Ask student to introduce themselves to at least three other students sitting next to them.
  • Ask students to share what fun activities they were doing last week.
  • Write on the whiteboard the activities that students did last week.
  • Tell students that today’s activity will be about reading and speaking about Craigslist ads and news articles.

Pre-Task 1:

Ads reading in pairs and Task 1 Presentation

(30 min)

  • Introduce craigslist ads (Appendix C)
  • Provide learners with job advertisements sheet.
  • Ask students to sit in pairs and each person will read their ads and the other listens.
  • While reading, rotate to check with students if they don’t know any words in the ads
  • Ask students to highlight the words that they don’t know.
  • Ask students to go to the white board and write the words that they don’t recognize.
  • After writing all the unrecognized words on the whiteboard, explain to the students the meaning of each word.
  • Finish the discussion about job ads and transition to the next task.

Task 1:

 

(20 min)

  • Write resume on the board.
  • Ask students if they know what the word is and explain it
  • Explain what employers need to provide a job.
  • Provide them with a resume sample (see Appendix D)
  • Discuss the details of this resume.
  • Allow some discussion time for the details of the resume, as they will use this sample to write their own resumes.
  • When you see that students finished discussion, ask them what the components of the resume are.
  • Provide them with an empty resume draft (appendix E) and have them write their own resume.
  • Ask them to share their resume with their peers to discuss their jobs, and experience.

Break

10 minutes

  • Gives a 10 minutes break to students to drink or eat.
  • Prepare the materials to introduce the second task.

Task 2:

(20 min)

  • Ask students to write on the whiteboard some Newspaper names they are familiar with or ready regularly.
  • Explain briefly that students will be reading funny short headlines from newspapers.
  • Provide the students with an envelope that contains slips of newspaper titles.
  • Tell the students to select one title and read it by themselves first.
  • Teacher asks each student to pair up with another student to exchange the newspaper titles.
  • Request from each team to present the headline and show the class why it is funny.
  • Help each team whenever he feels that the team does not catch the meaning of each headline.

Closing

(5 min)

  • Review the topics of Craigslist ads and newspaper headlines that they covered.
 

Homework

(5 min)

  • Ask students to write 50 words reflection about how they want to learn English and what they want English specifically for.

Appendix A: Craigslist advertisement

SPA DAY (King City)

We are looking for “beauty” people (massage, makeup, nails, hair, skin, fashionistas…) to volunteer their time/services for South Valley Mops’ Spa Day on March 19th 9-11am. There will be 20+ moms that we plan on pampering…it is a great way to get the word out about your business and get new clientele. We will also advertise your business in our newsletter for the rest of the year as our THANK YOU for your support!!!

 

Dining Room Server (Salinas)

We are looking for part-time as well as full-time servers for our Assisted Living Community dining room. Experience is preferred but not necessary. Please email your resume for consideration.

Payment: 9 dollars per hour.

 

Server (Part-Time) (Hollister area)

Provides friendly, prompt and accurate service to restaurant patrons. Breakfast and lunch service. Must be available for daytime and weekend schedules.

• Must be able to multi-task and work in a time-sensitive environment.

• Must have valid Food Handler’s Card.

Must have quality kitchen experience, management experience a plus. Good cooking technique, understands proper seasoning, knife skills. Individual needs a sense of professionalism and a passion for being in the kitchen. A working knowledge of food/labor costs, and scheduling preferred. Prior experience with fast paced line/banquet cooking.

Ability to work well with others.

A desire to produce fresh, local food.

Breakfast experience is a plus.
