This course introduces you to the exciting world of social movements and collective action. A lot of fascinating work is being done in the field – much more than we can tackle here. Thus, this class does not claim to be exhaustive (exhausting? maybe…).  Instead, we will read some interesting recent work in the area and discuss some of the major theoretical issues. We will primarily focus on a few important case studies, using these to develop a deeper understanding of the processes involved in social movement activity. Along the way we will be exposed to some key debates within the field, and maybe even start picking sides or at least picking a few fights.
