Claudia Tebay, a second year student in the Conference Interpretation program at the Monterey Institute talked with the MIIS Recruiting Department about the qualities necessary to enter and stay competitive in the Translation & Interpretation program. In addition, T&I first year student Margo Seeley, a native English speaker, explains in Spanish about how she prepared to come to the Monterey Institute and the qualities necessary to keep up with the demanding coursework here. Professor Marcos Celesia, Professor in the Translation & Interpretation program, explained the goal of the videos. “We wanted to produce videos for both native English and native Spanish speakers so that they could see the levels at which one must be able to communicate to be successful in our programs.” Professor Celesia explained that because language acquisition is a life long quest, many students don’t concretely understand the level of proficiency necessary to enter a professional graduate program. “We recommend that a student have spent at least one year, preferably more, working in the second language environment. The candidates who enter our program already are fluent in both languages. We prepare them with the skills to be competent translators or interpreters.”
