Middlebury students over the years have not simply joined together in moments of protest, but have organized student groups, forums, and events that have persisted over the years. In this section — which we call ‘politics’ instead of ‘protest’ — you will find information about events, individuals, and narratives in the College’s history that were not necessarily sparkly and momentary, but deeply rooted and multifaceted. These are the histories that are not necessarily reactionary or ‘activism’ as we think of it, but ways in which members of the Middlebury community have furthered their political awareness and worked on campaigns that never turned into a strike or a protest. Here you will find information about student organizations that took up issues of identity politics and groups that vowed to hold the school accountable to them over the course of many years. You will learn about political campaigns and the political standing of the student body and various points in time.
