E-Wave

E-Wave is Edmond Kirsch’s supercomputer invention. Along with Winston, E-Wave proves to be the most powerful computer on Earth in Origin. Kirsch took the idea for the name from NASA’s famed D-Wave computer (see below), calling it E-Wave because ‘E’ is one letter ahead of ‘D’ in the alphabet, indicating its superiority over D-Wave.

NASA

NASA is an independent agency of the executive branch of the U.S. Government. It is responsible for the space program, aeronautics research, and aerospace research. Formed on July 29, 1958, NASA is most widely known for running the Apollo program that put the first man on the moon.

D-Wave

D-Wave was one of the world’s first quantum computers created in 2011 by D-Wave Systems, inc. in Burnaby, British Columbia. It was also the first quantum computer to be sold, going for $10,000,000.

quantum computer

A quantum computer is a type of modern computer in the making that uses the principles of quantum theory to store information. Quantum theory explains how energy and matter  behave on  the atomic and subatomic level, using this to find a way to store information. If a quantum computers continued to be successfully developed, the leap forward in computing capability would be in the “billion-fold realm”.

superpositions

Superpositions are a fundamental principle of quantum mechanics, stating that any two, or more, quantum states can be added together and the result will be another quantum state.

quantum mechanics

Quantum mechanics, also known as quantum theory, is a field in physics that focuses on the nature of energy at the smallest scale (i.e. atoms and subatomic particles). It is used in quantum computing to find new ways to store information and make calculations. It is still a relatively young and new field in physics.

2001: A Space Odyssey

A 1968 epic science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey explores the idea of artificial intelligence becoming free thinking, much like Winston in Origin. The film performed well at the box office and was received with much acclaim. Famed author, Arthur C. Clarke, helped write the script.

HAL

The antagonist of 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL is the crew’s artificial intelligence aid. Ultimately, he becomes free thinking and attempts to destroy the crew. One can look at this reference as a foreshadow to Winston becoming the eventual antagonist in Origin.
