Cathedral as seen from Royal Palace of Madrid

Almudena Cathedral is located directly across from Madrid’s Royal Palace and is home to the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. The proximity of these two establishments parallels the strong bond of the crown and church, and the influence they have on one another.

 

 

 

 

Bishop’s cassock

 

Bishop Valdespino’s ceremonial robes consist of his traditional Catholic purple cassock, white rochet, and zucchetto on his head. He is properly dressed to lead a service, however, he misses it in order to live stream Kirsch’s announcement.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Spanish coat of arms

The flag of Spain displays a prominent crest known as the Spanish coat of arms. The Pillars of Hercules are featured on either side of the crest and are draped with the phrase “PLUS ULTRA“, meaning “further beyond.” The crest symbolizes the country and nation of Spain.

 

 

 

 

The phrase “to take solace in” means to find a source of comfort in a situation that is unfortunate.

Calle de Bailén

Calle de Bailén, or in English “Bailen street,” is one of the main thoroughfares in Madrid, Spain. The Royal Palace of Madrid is located on this street.
