It’s taken 6 months, but we’re very close to opening a new venue in the downtown space, formerly occupied by the restaurant, Eat Good Food. I’ve covered this issue in previous posts, and Middblog has the latest news (see the Dec 28th entry) and a link to a recent story in the Addison Independent describing the program, which includes three parts:

  • A bar/lounge on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.
  • Town/gown collaborations on weekday afternoons (art shows, performances, lectures, student org meetings, social activities for local teens, etc.).
  • A limited retail operation, featuring some College wares (for instance, faculty books, student a cappella cds), and . . . a chocolate bar.

The chocolate bar is new to the mix. We’re planning to sell a limited selection of chocolates—international and local—as well as beverages—coffees, tea, and hot chocolate—to go with them. The chocolate bar would operate during the day, and bring people into the venue on a regular basis for sweet stuff and caffeine, and to hang out.

We’re working now on furnishing the space—refinishing the floors and buying furniture. Flexibility is important, and atmosphere and ambience are key. We’re thinking intimate and upscale, hip and vibey.

But we need a name that captures the spirit of the place. Right now, we’re calling it 51 Main Street (yes, that’s the address), which is pretty pedestrian (if you will pardon the pun).

So consider this an official call for another name. In fact, let’s call it a contest. Post your suggestion as to what the place should be called, and we’ll choose a new name from the list of contenders. And the winner will get . . . some chocolate.

The competition will stay open until the end of Winter Term.

I still say we should call it FEGFS. It just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it? 😉

  2. I vote for Tim’s Place.

    How about “Club Midd”?

This place sounds like a real “class act”. The name should be simple, classy, provocative, and sound nice. It sounds like this is the sort of place that would have the perfect sort of ambiance. So…why not call it simply “Ambiance” classy, and it’s a word that’s pleasing to the ear.

    Ambiance.

In the Campus, Tamara Hilmes used “A Sweet Revival” to headline the photos. I think that, or simply “Sweet Revival,” could make a catchy name.

Of primary importance to this space is a name that offers equal sense of belonging to both college members and town members. You can’t name it something that only represents one and expect equal participation and support in it from the other.

What transcends the historically controversial town – college relationship more than anything else? The appreciation of the natural landscape. Otter Creek has been identified by the town as an asset that is not as much a part of the “Middlebury Experience” as it should be. Two significant features of Otter Creek right below 51 Main St. are the falls and the eddy.

Why not name the space something like “The Eddy” or the “The Otter Eddy” or maybe even a play on words of the last one like “Odder Eddy.” Or maybe it has something to do with the falls. Either way, it must uniquely join the town and college like never before.

Good luck, its a tough one.
