Observatory Roof Deck Policies

 
The Mittelman Observatory roof deck atop McCardell Bicentennial Hall is a special place on campus.  Astronomical observing for academic courses on the Observatory roof deck is a special academic opportunity.  However, there are important safety concerns for the privileged use of this unique environment.

All students are obliged to follow these policies when visiting the Observatory roof deck.

General roof deck access policies:

  • Watch your step and watch for uneven footing.
  • Do not lean over rails or climb on walls.
  • Do not bring food or drink.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Do not run, jump, or engage in rowdy behavior.
  • Do not push, shove, or cut in line.
  • Do not throw anything from the roof.
  • Do not take flash photography.
  • Follow all instructions provided by Observatory staff.

Wintertime roof deck access policies:

  • Dress warmly for inclement weather to avoid exposure.
  • Watch your step and watch for snow and ice.

Academic course roof deck access policies:

  • Do not invite or bring friends or family to academic course activities.

COVID-19 roof deck access policies:

  • Wear an N95 grade respirator-style face mask, even on the roof deck.

Non-astronomy roof deck access policies:

  • Do not touch or disturb telescopes or other astronomical or scientific equipment on the roof deck.

Remember to be safe to make your observing experience an enjoyable and educational one!
