Week 6 Day 1 Discussion Question 1

Patricia Hill Collins writes that “the controlling images of Black femininity and Black masculinity participate in creating [new ideological justifications for] racism, class exploitation, sexism, and/or heterosexism” (122).  Yet Collins also argues that African American women and men use those same controlling images, such as the figure of the “bitch,” to resist oppression (123).  According to Collins, how do “representations of Black women as bitches” serve as sites of oppression and resistance in commodified Black culture? (123).
