Welcome to International Education Day
The Monterey Institute is dedicated to reaching out to the communities encompassing the greater Monterey area and Monterey County. In particular by forging relationships with Monterey youth and encouraging them to think and learn globally. International Education Day is the Monterey Institute’s spin-off event from International Education Week. We invite 3-4 area high schools to bring students to our campus to get a taste of what it’s like to experience the world.
Students participate in 30 minute language lessons where the visiting students sit through a mini-language lesson of their choice. This year we will be offering them the opportunity to see what studying French, Greek, Spanish, Malagasy, and Arabic just to name a few.
The next session is a special showcase by current ESL students at MIIS. They will share the customs and traditions of their homes. The ESL students often bring treats or snacks, and the High School students get a real feel for what it’s like to be studying in a foreign country.
Around the World is a wonderful opportunity for our visitors to see what it’s like as a U.S. student studying, traveling and working abroad. In this play on a round of “speed-dating†they will get to hear from returning JET participants, Peace Corp Volunteers, Fulbright Scholars and other MIIS students who have lived or worked abroad.
To wrap things up they will also get to learn what it’s like to go to high school in other nations. The High School International session will introduce them to the educational system in other countries and compare what high school is like in the U.S. to what it’s like other places in the world.
The Monterey Institute is excited to have these young people on our campus and experience all that the school has to offer. The goal is to encourage them to look beyond the obvious solutions and continue to seek out new innovations in their academic and personal lives. There are many opportunities awaiting them and their experiences on International Education Day will show them the way to their futures.
