Wikipeding on Facebook Chat II

So I put the changes back in. I had an incredibly frustrating time getting the citations to look right and the second one still isn’t right, but Ross Dining is closing for lunch in fourteen minutes. Could someone try to fix the second citation? I’m really curious to know what I’m doing wrong.

Let’s see what happens now…

Update: Citation formatting was fixed.

Similar to Wikipedia but not really

So here’s something I’ve wanted to post since class this afternoon.

It’s a site called Encyclopedia Dramatica.

It’s formatted exactly like Wikipedia except that it specializes in internet memes and the like. Go here if you want to find out the real meaning of “shoop da whoop” or “over 9000!!”

I thought this was really interesting since the site has a much more relaxed feel to it than wikipedia, so it offers a different perspective about how a wiki can be used.

Oh, yeah, and I should warn you that some “mature” stuff is right on the front page. You’ve been warned.

And no, this is not a rick roll. 🙂

Zhu Rangers

I meant to post this awhile ago, but I thought this class might appreciate it. This is the original opening credits to the Zhu Rangers, the show the Power Rangers used clips from to make the american show. I’m writing my thesis on the differences and theory of the two shows and I’ll show you guys a key point in my argument. Notice how the Yellow Ranger is a male in the Japanese version, but is played by a female in the American version? Bet you didn’t see that coming–I know I didn’t

Rock Band song

Since Thompson is a musician and I love editing, we decided to make a music video about RockBand. We both play guitar and find that there is absolutely no correlation between playing real guitar and playing RockBand, and that’s pretty much the theme of our song. Hope you enjoy it!

Wikipedia edit

The cinema of Weimar Germany…ahhh. Could there be anything more engaging to right about? Sure. But because some of my favorite films came out of this period, I decided to add what I know to wikipedia’s knowledge of this important period in film history.

The Original Youtuber

Here’s my Wikipedia edit. I’m writing a research paper on Bruce Conner so I did a brief edit of his surprisingly short entry. I recommend everyone here checking out some of his films (they’re available at the library circ desk). Most of his films are all found-footage: he was one of the original, and in my opinion, the greatest of the remake video artists.

Censorship in comics?

I think this article is very pertinent to our discussion of comics. It discusses censorship in comics in the mid-20th century in a very balanced way. One possible criticism of it is that it doesn’t separate the medium/grammar of comics from the content of comics. Anyway money quote:

In the two years after Wertham’s book came out, more than a dozen publishers and hundreds of cartoonists left the field. Those publishers that remained were severely restricted by a self-imposed code that prevented comics from publishing anything but the most anodyne kiddies’ fare. Only with the rise of graphic novels in the last few years have comics recovered from the stigma of the Wertham years. For Hajdu, the comic-book crackdown was a “purge,” a precursor to later panics over rock music and video games.

Wikipeding on Facebook Chat

I’m sure many of you where taken aback by Facebook’s newest feature, Chat. It will be interesting to see how successful this is. I for one think the way Facebook releases new features is a bit curious. They release the new feature and then a few days later put a post in the mini-feed about. I think they would have less backlash against change if they gave more of a warning about their features before they released them.

But regardless I thought Wikipedia should know about this new feature. So I did this and this. It will be interesting to see how the community takes my changes. I might add footnotes later, but I couldn’t find any news articles on Facebook chat yet.

I also made a change on the blogger, Andrew Sullivan’s page.

South Park

Did anyone see last night’s episode of South Park? It was amazing. It talks a lot about digital media and parodies many of the “viral videos” we have all seen on youtube. While the episode is hilarious on the whole, the last few minutes are the big pay off as it relates to our class.

click on the episode called “canada on strike” which is currently on the right side of the homepage, but it can also be found by going to “full episodes”-> “season 12”-> “Canada on strike”

Here is the clip of the last 30 seconds.

It should be noted that the South Park creators are NOT members of the Writers Guild of America, and continued to produce new episodes throughout the writers strike. Also, the episode is dripping with irony as every South Park episode is available free online, distributed by the show’s creators.

AI

Hey guys,

I posted this link on one of my comments to the readings, but didn’t think anyone would find it there, so I’m reposting it here out in the open. It’s a really interesting online simulation experience, rather than a game. Check it out:

Oh, and by the way, feel free to write or ask her anything, because you get really funny and/or interesting responses that will either make sense, or will seem  a little ridiculous…

I’m a Playa

After playing Guitar Hero and developing a split-second obsession with it today, I realized that the medium of the guitar controller is totally different than the stock console controllers used today (aside from the Wii). It kind of brought me back to my Duck Hunt days, when I pointed that bright orange plastic gun at the television screen. Anyway, I figured I’d share that little flashback in gaming that I experienced today.

Another thing I wanted to discuss (which is totally irrelevant to what was previously said) is the totally new platform for gaming that the iPhone will deliver… once developers get their hands on the new SDK developing software made for Apple by Apple (FABA). With its built in “accelerator,” Apple iPhone gaming reaches a whole new level where the person interacting just moves the iPhone around and gets instantaneous results in the game. If you’d like to dig deeper and see what I actually mean, check out this link to an article where this quote is taken from:

“The iPhone’s three-axis accelerometer and touch screen is earning the most comparisons to Nintendo’s Wii and its remote. To that end, Adams suggests that game publishers — and consumers — may want to take note of what’s happened in that market.”
