Middlebury College actively maintains 28 large heritage elm trees. It is the largest collection of old elms in the state of Vermont, and one of the largest in New England. Several of these trees are well over 150 years old and greater than 90’ tall. While once a dominant tree across campus, most of them succumbed to Dutch Elm disease at the end of the last century, but the ones remaining are healthy, stately specimens.
For more information, see A Brief History of the Elms of Middlebury, and to read about the disease, see Dutch Elm disease and treatments.
