Achvat Amim – Solidarity of Nations is a framework for meaningful engagement with leading Israeli social justice organizations in and around Jerusalem. Achvat Amim focuses on developing practical skills in community development and education through intensive volunteer projects and engaging with social change and human rights movements. By renewing the conversation on Jewish Peoplehood and Zionism for the 21st century, participants can explore and help shape Jewish culture and identity for themselves and the Jewish people. The Intensive Arabic Semester Program offers a holistic approach to language learning, coexistence work, and inter-community volunteering between Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs. During the course of the five-month program, our students learn Hebrew, standard and spoken Arabic, and Israeli and Middle Eastern History. Students experience Israeli Kibbutz life while simultaneously being immersed in the local Arab culture through volunteering, field trips, and home stay families. The program is administered by Givat Haviva and now is accredited by the Al Qasemi Academic College of Education. The Lotan Center for Creative Ecology offers short and long-term hands-on opportunity at Kibbutz Lotan to allow anyone to discover the challenges involved with the design, building and running of sustainable communities, linking together ecological, social, economical and spiritual aspects into a unified whole. Practical skills are developed through hands-on work in our environmental education center, organic gardens, alternative/natural building projects and the Lotan Nature and Migratory Bird Reserve, complemented by theoretical sessions in topics such as ecological design, permaculture and sustainability. Practical work includes: Organic gardening, natural & alternative building with mud, straw and straw bales, tires and recycled waste, creative recycling – creating art and usable objects with discarded materials, expansion, maintenance and running of the Center for Creative Ecology, development and upkeep of the nature reserve and nature trails, setting up workshops for educational tour groups, and more. Our knowledgeable KPC staff works one-on-one to help each applicant create a personalized 4-10 month Israel experience. Each program is uniquely built by and for the participants allowing them to engage with the Israeli social justice struggles that best fit their values and interests. Population Media Center (PMC) strives to improve the health and well-being of people around the world through the use of entertainment-education strategies, like serialized dramas (soap operas) on radio and television, in which characters evolve into role models for the audience for positive behavior change.

They are currently accepting applications for Spring/Summer 2014 internships, particularly for Marketing & Communications. The current focus is on content strategy and implementation for PMC’s website. The position requires strong writing and research skills. The Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty integrates rigorous academic study and focused direct service to disadvantaged communities and persons, enriching the education of undergraduate and law students in all majors and career paths. The intent of this program is to prepare students for lives aimed at diminishing poverty and enhancing human capability through professional and civic efforts.

Middlebury’s Community Engagement office will be participating in this poverty studies internship program that places students in agencies that serve disadvantaged communities through the Shepherd Alliance based at Washington and Lee University. Middlebury will select and send up to five summer interns, who will join a total of nearly 100 peers from other campuses. A stipend and housing are provided.

Addison County Poverty Internships offer meaningful opportunities to spend summer fighting poverty in Vermont. This year the paid internships will take place at the John Graham Homeless Shelter, the Addison County Council Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, and the Open Door Clinic. Interns will earn $9.20 per hour, 35 hours per week. Students can choose to reside on campus for $100 per week, meal plan included.

More than 50 wide-ranging opportunities with NOAA : Apply now !!

Midd alum Ruth Kelty ’95 with NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science is pleased to announce more than 50 wide-ranging internships open to Middlebury students in a variety of majors and interests. Through this internship program, opportunities will be available in NOAA labs and offices nationwide, working in fields such as applied ocean and atmospheric science, policy, and science communication. Each student’s summer activities will be overseen and mentored by a NOAA staff member.

Internships are in the natural and social sciences and last approximately 10 weeks. Start dates are flexible, but most internships begin in June and end in August. Interns will be selected on a competitive basis. While these are unpaid internships, the Center for Education in Action is committed to providing funding for up to three of these opportunities (current seniors are not eligible for funding but may still apply for the internships).

Winter Term ’13 – Teton Science Schools Sustainability and Education Interns in Kelly, WY

An Internship with the Sustainability Coordinator at Teton Science Schools is a winter term experience available to motivated Middlebury students interested in organizational sustainability.

The intern will work on the sustainability audit (STARS) and the development of a Sustainability Report, describing the outcomes of the audit and the school’s efforts towards sustainability. As part of this program, the Intern will have the option to take a Winter Ecology Course (3-9 days) and work on the development of sustainability curriculum within the Field Education Program, including exploring pedagogy and field teaching, depending on the interests of the intern.

The Sustainability Initiative at Teton Science Schools is the process of educating about and monitoring our natural resource use. This process helps us to understand our environmental, community and economic impacts and make informed decisions regarding energy use, resource consumption and waste.
