The broad focus is on Sensing and Signaling in Biological Systems. The team of REU faculty represent multiple modern scientific disciplines including cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physical chemistry, and computational biology.
Rising sophomores and rising junior undergraduate science majors to apply are encouraged to apply! Underrepresented minorities, women, and first generation college students are also strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must be a US citizen or permanent resident!

The North East Water Resources Network has paid opportunities for undergraduate students to carry out research for 10 weeks during the summer – in their Vermont, Rhode Island and Delaware research locations.

Research interns will be part of teams who are investigating the impact of climate variability and extreme weather events on water quality and quantity across the north-south gradient from VT to DE. They will investigate how to provide valuable and rapid information to stakeholders (resource users, resource managers, and policy makers) to lead to more time-efficient and better-informed land and water use decision making.

The Research on Adaptation to Climate Change (RACC) internship program is designed to provide student research opportunities in lake and watershed biogeochemistry, ecology, climatology, hydrology, and environmental policy and management.  They are especially interested in supporting students from populations underrepresented in science, including students from two year colleges, veterans, individuals with disabilities, and underrepresented minorities.

The Davis Projects for Peace program is an invitation to undergraduates at the American colleges and universities in the Davis United World College Scholars Program to design grassroots projects that they will implement during the summer of 2015.

Undergraduate students at more than 90 college campuses across the United States, including those of you who will graduate this academic year, are eligible to design and submit proposals that address the goal of improving the prospects for peace in the 21st century.  The top submissions from the participating campuses, including at least one from Middlebury, will receive funding of $10,000 with which to initiate projects anywhere in the world during the summer of 2015.

  This week, the second annual Social Entrepreneurs Challenge was launched! Hosted on CrowdRise, the Challenge provides some of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs with an innovative platform to raise funds.

Organizations participating in the Challenge are recipients of our “Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship” and represent some of the most successful entrepreneurial organizations in the world.

Individuals can support and fundraise for participating social entrepreneurs and their gifts will be leveraged by the Skoll Foundation.  This year, more than $3 million in prize and match funding will be available to participants.

This February, new Febs will have the opportunity to go on a Community Engagement Trip – an immersive day and half of service! The Coordinator will work five paid hours per week between now and mid-February to plan and implement this new program.

Position Responsibilities:
Work, with advising from the Associate Director of Community Engagement and Orientations Coordinator, to plan and implement all aspects of the February Community Engagement Trips program, a new program that invites incoming Feb students to participate in a day and a half of service to learn about their new community. Select and train student leaders; work with community partners to design engagement opportunities; plan and arrange trip transportation; design and implement leader training program, including leader site visits; serve as primary contact person for prospective participants, leaders, and other interested parties; serve as on-call contact person when trips are on-site; review and revise Leader Handbook as needed; plan and present the annual post-program slide show in conjunction with FOOcoordinators; other duties as assigned. Must be willing to work some weekends, and Wednesday evenings during J-Term. This position ends through the second week of the spring semester, with potential for continued work on orientation trips programs.

Education and Training:
•Current Middlebury student
•Past experience working in the Community Engagement Office, participation or leadership in Service Cluster Board student organizations or previous experience leading MiddView
•Experience in peer-leadership roles
•Meticulous organizational skills and attention to detail
•College van license helpful but not required

New-Rosies-Logo-2005Rosie’s Place was founded in 1974 as the first women’s shelter in the United States. Their mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment that helps poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives.

The Kip Tiernan Social Justice Fellowship honors the lifelong work of the founder of Rosie’s Place. The Fellowship is awarded annually to a woman to develop and carry out a special project in New England that will improve the lives of poor and homeless women and further the mission of Rosie’s Place. Read about our current Fellowship project. 

Eligible projects could include the following:

  • A policy initiative or campaign
  • A creative arts program
  • The development and implementation of a needed service
  • The creation of an innovative project aimed at reducing poverty, promoting social justice and empowering poor and homeless women.

The Fellowship is 12 months long and is awarded on a one-time basis to an eligible woman. Fellows are paid a $40,000 stipend.

It is important to know that the CSE Fellowship is not only for students who have specific project ideas, but also for any Middlebury student (graduating 16.5, 17 and 17.5) who has a genuine passion for positive social change and the aspiration to lead with humility and empathy. The CSE believes that investing in and supporting promising Middlebury students with the ability to think creatively and execute their ideas will result in a lifetime of leadership.

For those who are not aware, the CSE Fellowship is among a small handful of opportunities in the country that provide college students with unique access and exposure to mentorship, funding, and a vast network of individuals and organizations who are leading positive social change around the world. Becoming a CSE Fellow opens the door to a lifetime of social change.

Assessing Community Impact

How does your community-connected service, learning and research impact the community within which you work?  What is the impact on you?  How do your know when your actions lead to developed capacity or whether they contribute to unintended harm? Come to “Assessing Community Impact”, a workshop with facilitators Shannon Morrissey and Robert Burack from Break Away. Shannon and Robert will share their assessment framework as they invite you to explore and develop your own! David S. Stone ’74 Tree House Fund

Up to $2,200 total will be awarded this fall for one or several creative student projects that benefit Middlebury students, the environment, or the community, such as the tree house that David Stone ’74 built near the golf course for students and area kids to enjoy! Charter House info session

The Charter House Coalition is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide basic food and housing in and around the Middlebury community. During the long winter months, CHC provides families with a transitional housing program in the Charter House that is staffed mainly through volunteers. The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer. For 20 years, this program has increased awareness of DOE research opportunities to students pursuing STEM degrees (science, technology, engineering and math). The goal of the program is to improve opportunities for women and minority students in these fields, however all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.  Stipends start at $600 per week and eligible Fellows will receive an additional travel and housing allowance.  For more information, visit http://orise.orau.gov/mlef/.
