Museum Assistant Internship Description

The Sheldon Museum, a historic museum that offers a diverse, in-depth look at the history and art of the Mid-Lake Champlain region of Vermont, seeks a student to work with the Executive Director and Associate Director on a variety of projects related to museum collections, current exhibits, and marketing (primarily assisting with all social media-related efforts and keeping the website current). Projects may include: helping with the installation and events management for new exhibits; mounting small displays from the Sheldon Museum’s permanent collection, revising/creating signage and labels in the museum and updating the hands-on education gallery. The Intern will also be involved with visitor services (working at the front desk on occasion), and offer administrative support related to membership and fundraising.

Interest in history and art and current skills in social networking, Face Book, Twitter, and Instagram are helpful, as well as knowledge of website development and maintenance. The Sheldon prefers current freshman, sophomore, and junior applicants.

Approximately 4 hours/week, sometime during the hours 9 AM – 5 PM during Museum hours, Tues-Fri 9AM – 5 PM

Archival Assistant Internship Description

The Sheldon Museum’s Stewart-Swift Research Center is an archival repository that houses variety of materials documenting Middlebury and Mid-Lake Champlain region of Vermont. The Center seeks a dependable student to work under the supervision of the Archivist on a special project to organize and catalog a unique collection of several thousand photographs and negatives of aerial and other views created by a local photographer from 1930 to 1960.

Project will include: physical organization of the collection; rehousing of all items in archival sleeves and boxes; compilation of a detailed record of the entire collection; and creation of an online finding aid to all images.

Excellent organization skills and attention to detail; ability to categorize groups of materials; ability to follow detailed instructions but also to work independently; experience with Excel spreadsheets and willingness to learn museum software. Interest in photography, Vermont history and landscape is helpful. Preference will be given to current sophomore or junior applicants with some experience in research projects.

Hours/Schedule: Flexible, approximately 4 hours/week, Wed-Fri, 9-5pm
