Research Group

Middlebury students can join my research group for a summer project through Middlebury’s summer research programs, by speaking to me about enrolling in research for academic credit (PHYS 500), or by expressing interest in a senior research project (PHYS 704). Students interested in any of these research opportunities should come speak to me or send me an email.

Research Group Activities

  • June 2025 – Middlebury students Hannah Alberti, Eli Haas, and Ben Korzenik join the Brumback research group for the summer!
  • May 2025 – Senior Colin Bourque graduates from Middlebury College! He earned the Robert K. Gould Prize in Physics for his outstanding work in his senior thesis research project, which resulted in a XRISM guest observer proposal. Congratulations Colin!
  • February 2025 – Colin Bourque continues his senior research by taking a senior thesis research project.
  • January 2025 – Kendall’s first paper has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal! This work represents Kendall’s undergraduate thesis work investigating the effects of different levels of radiation from supermassive black holes on exoplanet atmospheres. Read the full paper here. Congratulations Kendall!
  • January 2025 – Prof. Brumback and Kendall traveled to National Harbor, MD, to attend the 245th meeting of the American Astronomical Society. Kendall gave a talk on their work studying the effect of supermassive black hole radiation on exoplanet atmospheres.
  • September 2024 – Colin Bourque begins his senior research project investigating high resolution X-ray spectra of 4U 1700-377 and its potential as a XRISM target.
  • August 2024 – The Brumback group welcomes Kendall Sippy, a recent graduate from Dartmouth College, for a one-year post-baccalaureate position. Kendall will work on research projects related to accreting neutron stars and support undergraduate research within the group. Welcome Kendall!
  • July 2025 – members of the Brumback research group present research posters at the Summer Student Symposium. Well done Hannah, Colin, and Ainsley!
  • June 2024 – Middlebury students Hannah Alberti, Colin Bourque, and Ainsley Fremont join the Brumback research group for the summer!
  • February 2024 – Middlebury student Colin Bourque joins the Brumback group for a PHYS 500 project looking for cyclotron resonance scattering features in NuSTAR data of the X-ray binary 4U 1700-377
