Topic: How to Reach the Uninterested Student. Led by Yonna McShane, Director of Learning Resources, CTLR.
Who’s Invited: All liaisons and anyone who might be interested
Who’s “Required”: Primary liaisons, please try to attend if you can. Sorry in advance for any conflicts.
Where and when: Friday, December 14, 10-11 am. Location LIB 201 (Watson Lecture Hall)

Description: Yonna frequently coaches students and faculty on how to improve their presentation skills. She’ll gear this session toward liaisons who lead LIS workshops. How can we “hook” students at the beginning of a workshop so that they stick with us for the whole class period? She will provide tips on handling question and answer sections of the presentation. Yonna also will give tips on professional conference presentations, including visual aids.

Topic: Increasing student participation in our workshops. Led by Richard Jenkins, Joy Pile, Wendy Shook, and Carrie Macfarlane.
Who’s Invited: All liaisons and anyone who might be interested
When and where: Monday, October 29, 9:30-10:30 am. LIB 145.

Description: We’ve all been trying new techniques to make our classes more interactive. Richard, Joy, Wendy and Carrie will share some of their recent attempts, then turn the floor over to the group for discussion. Come ready to tell others about your own ideas, whether you’ve tested them in the classroom or not. Why? Here are at least 10 reasons, and when we meet, I’m sure we’ll come up with more. Bring a laptop if you’d like to try out one of our polls.

We’ve been receiving more requests for help with alternative bibliographic management software. UVM has been supporting Zotero for a few years now, so I’ve invited librarian Daisy Benson to visit for a Zotero demo and discussion. We can talk about other tools too (Noodlebib and Easybib have been mentioned in recent years), and consider investigating them later.

Sorry to spill over into the lunch hour. The room is being used until 11, and since Daisy is coming all the way from Burlington I thought we should block off more than just 60 minutes. You may leave whenever you need to!

Liaison Discussion Section: Video Tutorials for Library Instruction

Topic: Video Tutorials for Library Instruction, presented by Larraby Fellows of CCV
Who’s Invited: All liaisons and anyone else who is interested
When: Friday, January 13, from 2:30-4 pm
Where: Davis Family Library 105

Larraby Fellows, Public Services Librarian at the Community College of Vermont, will tell us how she creates video tutorials for library instruction. Larraby’s presentation will help us kick off our second round of information literacy tutorial planning and creation. Larraby has a nice collection of tutorials on the CCV site. A few of my personal favorites: Go Local? VT Issues & Events as Paper Topics, How Do I Get Help? and Search Words.

Topics will include:

  • Setting goals based on the purpose of the tutorial (eg, on-the-fly instruction, explanation of research concepts, advertisement)
  • Creating consistency and “branding” across tutorials: Setting protocols, where to find copyright-free image collections, how to decide which images to use
  • Moving from step-by-step tutorials toward concept tutorials
  • Time requirements, workflow recommendations, keeping material up-to-date
  • Results/statistics
  • Tech tips: Larraby will tell us why she uses Adobe Captivate (we don’t have Captivate here at Midd)

Two New Civil War Collections Won for Special Collections

Erastus Hibbard Phelps Collection

The winning bid on the Archive of Civil War paymaster Erastus Hibbard Phelps, Middlebury Class of 1861, was made at auction by Andy Wentink, Curator of Special Collections & Archives. The archive was one among nearly 350 lots of American History, including Civil War, materials offered by Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati, OH, last Friday morning, December 2. The Phelps Archive comprises 334 letters, 4 diaries (3 from Civil War years), 2 bound volumes including a photo album containing portraits of graduates of the Middlebury Class of 1861, many of which are inscribed to Phelps. The archive also includes two photos of Phelps previous to his years at Middlebury, his paymaster sidearm (a Colt 1851 Navy 36 caliber pistol), what is believed to be his sheepskin winter jacket worn on duty, and a leather documents trunk carried during his service.

Topic: “Let the Technology Do the Work: Sharing the Same News to Different Audiences,” presented by Jess Isler, Carrie Macfarlane and Joy Pile  (This will be a repeat performance of their presentation at the October Conference at the Dartmouth Biomedical Libraries. The theme of the conference was, “If You’ve Got It, Flaunt it! Promoting Our Resources and Services.”)
Who’s Invited: All Liaisons, Web Development Workgroup members, LIS Web Team, Senior Leadership Team, and anyone who is interested
When:  Wednesday, November 30 from 2-3 pm
Where: Davis Family Library 105

We have Facebook, Twitter, blogs, a web site, and email distribution lists–there are more communication forums on our campus than we should mention here. We also have a constant stream of news and tips to share. What don’t we have? Like most other libraries, our staffing is finite. To save time and effort, we use technology to help us promote our resources across different platforms and to different audiences.

Almost every day the federal government is in the news, and quite often the coverage is front page news that can impact our lives in many ways. This session will delve into the full range of Congressional information resources, from the earliest reports of American expeditions around the world to the latest information on Congressional “pork barrel” expenditures and how members of our Vermont Congressional delegation have voted on various issues. A future session will be devoted to information resources from various agencies within the Executive branch of the federal government. Continue reading →
