Beyond Yourself in Language Development, or B.U.I.L.D., is a student-run group at MIIS. This group ecnourages fun and interactive language learning for those who may want to practice their language outside of class, or begin a new language from the beginning. As a fellow language learner and teacher, passionate about the French language, I have volunteered my time this year to co-teach one Beginner’s French class for one hour a week. The B.U.I.L.D. classes are open to both MIIS students and community members. This semester, I have been teaching French to these students, starting with the basics. We do interactive activities and grammar exercises to give them both the tools and the passion necessary to learn a new language. I find that teaching a language is the best way to re-learn it in a sense, since it forces you to take a step back and truly understand all the facets and nuances of the language in order to best explain it to others. Here are some pictures of our classroom and activities (the photos shown are from the class where we discussed food items, the importance of food in French culture, and ordering at restaurants).
