Editorial: An Internship from Your Couch

What is the value of having a “virtual” internship? In my opinion, wasn’t the original point of a traditional internship to have the experience of going into the office and seeing how you work with others and learning from their experiences?

Jonnelle Marte debates the new trend in at home “virtual” internships. College students are now finding more online internship opportunities in which they can have the credit of internship while working at home and without ever even meeting their boss or supervisor.

2 Winter Term Deadlines Extended!

Shelter Intern with the Middlebury Transitional Care Coalition/ Charter House Middlebury, VT

Full-time internship positions are available during J-Term at a transitional housing facility. The facility opened last January in response to critical housing needs in the midst of the economic downturn. Led by a team of committed community volunteers and Middlebury College student interns, the shelter was staffed 24/7 throughout the Winter months by an all-volunteer crew recruited primarily from area religious groups and Middlebury College. Interns are expected to assist with facility operations, work directly with house residents, and help coordinate other community volunteers. EXTENDED DEADLINE: October 16

Duties may include:  Identify and reach out to homeless individuals and families to build trusting relationships in order to foster empowerment and assist with transition from homelessness to housing; Assist with intake process, forms and recordkeeping as needed; Build trust and self esteem with clients through daily interaction via one on one and group activities. Goals and teaching methods for English in the setting of Nosara are different from the way foreign languages are taught in the US. We are not teaching reading and writing skills, nor are we after an in-depth understanding of the grammar and structure of English. Our job is to help the local students to communicate with English speakers at whatever level they can reach. DEADLINE: October 9

World Camp offers a unique international development intern program that allows individuals to make a significant impact by teaching children and teachers over the course of four day educational camps in rural primary schools.
